Does your class promote autonomy or obedience? Does it facilitate positive emotions or fear? Does it foster self-awareness or compliance? Does grading empower or weaken your students? This workshop will help you explore just that.
Previous participants' feedback on the workshop:
“I have never before looked at my classroom in this way.”
“You gave me passion to teach again.”
We all know very well the content that we teach and that we design our instruction around. But this is not all that students learn from our classrooms. Without us noticing, we teach an implicit (hidden) curriculum that has lasting effects on student learning, performance, and well-being.
In this workshop, we will explore tools to assess the classroom culture like anthropologists. We will investigate how the physical and social arrangements of our classrooms affect the skills our students gain, the behaviors they develop, and the kind of persons they grow up to be. Finally, we will start building a conceptual approach to design a classroom culture that brings the best out of our students.
Primary Audience: Teachers to all age groups, Educators with leadership responsibilities
Length of time: 4.5 hours plus a 15-minute break, given over one or two days
Part 1: Uncovering aspects of the implicit curriculum
We will work in groups and use tools to uncover our unique classroom cultures just like anthropologists. We will then assess the way these cultures shape student learning and well-being and rethink practices that we have been considering a “natural” part of our classroom environments.
Part 2: Investigating the practice of evaluation
We will discuss the implicit messages that the “practice” of evaluation that we apply in our classrooms sends to our students and the way it affects their learning, performance, and wellbeing. By the end of this session, we will organize our learning from the whole workshop by building a map-like artifact that details our current classroom culture versus what we agree to be an “ideal classroom culture” that promotes deep and creative learning, student wellbeing, and the skills that our students need to lead successful lives.
